Hotels near the Anne Frank House: three areas

The museum stands on the Prinsengracht, on the edge of the Jordaan and inside the wider ring of canals. Most visitors who want to walk to the house look in the Jordaan or along the canal belt. De Pijp lies further away and works if you are happy to use public transport.

This page compares areas only. It names no hotels and quotes no room prices, because rates and availability change by date. Pick an area first, then check the individual property against the points below. If you want to fill a day around your stay, see the walking tours of Jewish Amsterdam that start in the centre.

For most visitors who want a short walk to the museum, the Jordaan or the canal belt around the Prinsengracht is the simplest place to start. Choose De Pijp when the neighbourhood matters more than the walk.

Jordaan and canal belt in detail

The two areas closest to the museum.

The Jordaan

The Jordaan has small museums, galleries, restaurants and market streets. The Noordermarkt holds a farmers' market on Saturdays and a flea market on Mondays. The Westerstraat has a fabric market on Mondays, and the Lindengracht has a general market on Saturdays. These are lively streets, so a room facing one of them may be noisier on those days.

Not every room in the area is quiet and not every hotel is a short walk from the house. Check the street and the walking route. The nearby page lists twelve places in the area worth a stop.

The canal belt

The canal belt is the larger ring of historic canals. The Nine Streets, a group of shopping streets, sit inside it, and so does the Prinsengracht, where the house stands. "On the canal belt" is a broad description, not a distance. A hotel on a different canal can be much further from the entrance at Westermarkt 20 than one on the Prinsengracht.

De Pijp and how to choose

A different base, and the checks that matter for any area.

De Pijp

De Pijp is a neighbourhood with its own character. It has the Albert Cuyp market and the Sarphatipark, and it suits a stay built around food and everyday city life. It is not a short walk from the museum. Look up the real tram, metro or bus connection and the travel time for your dates before you book. Our getting there page explains the situation at Westermarkt, where trams do not stop at present.

Luggage

The museum cloakroom takes coats, bags and pushchairs, but only bags smaller than an A4 sheet are allowed on the route. It does not store large rucksacks or suitcases. Ask your accommodation about luggage storage on arrival and departure days.

Stairs and lifts

Accessibility differs from one property to the next. If stairs are a problem, ask about the floor, the lift and the entrance before you book. The historic part of the museum also has steep stairs, as described on the opening hours page.

Quiet and street noise

Ask which side the room faces and whether a market or other busy spot is on the street. No area is guaranteed to be calm, so check the individual room.

Where to stay: frequently asked questions

Where is the best area to stay near the Anne Frank House?

The Jordaan and the canal belt around the Prinsengracht are the closest. Choose by the actual walking route to Westermarkt 20, not by the area name.

Is the Jordaan a good base for visiting the museum?

It is next to the house and has small museums, galleries, restaurants and markets. Not every street is quiet, so check the room's location.

Can I stay in De Pijp and still visit the house?

Yes, but plan the public transport connection and allow for the last stretch on foot, because there is no tram stop at Westermarkt at present.

Can I leave my luggage at the museum?

Only small items. Coats, small bags and pushchairs can go in the cloakroom. Large rucksacks and suitcases cannot, so arrange storage with your hotel first.

Do you list hotel prices?

No. Rates and availability change by date, so this page compares areas and leaves the prices to the booking sites you use.

Is this the official site of the Anne Frank House?

No. This is an independent guide with no connection to the museum, the Anne Frank Stichting or the Anne Frank Fonds. Entry tickets are sold only by the museum itself.
