The Jewish Cultural Quarter in Amsterdam

The Jewish Cultural Quarter (Joods Cultureel Kwartier) is a group of four sites in Amsterdam: the Jewish Museum with Jewish Museum junior, the Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum and the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Together they tell the history of Jewish life in Amsterdam, its religion and culture, and the persecution of Dutch Jews during the German occupation.

The museum group is not the whole of Jewish Amsterdam. Today's museums are one part of a much larger history of the old Jewish quarter and the city. The Anne Frank House is a separate museum on the Prinsengracht with its own tickets. This page covers the Jewish Cultural Quarter and the Names Memorial. For the house itself, see the page on Anne Frank House tickets.

The combination ticket and the Duo ticket are valid for one week, with one visit per included site. You do not have to see everything on the same day. The single ticket for the National Holocaust Museum is valid for one day. Buying paid tickets at the desk costs €2 more than buying online, so book ahead. The Quarter does not use a timed online system like the Anne Frank House.

Holders of a Museumkaart, an ICOM card or an I amsterdam City Card can enter free. Card terms differ from museum to museum, so check yours before you go. They do not carry over to the Anne Frank House. For most visitors, the combination ticket is the simplest choice if you want the Holocaust Museum as well. For the Jewish Museum and the synagogue alone, the Duo ticket is enough.

Accessibility

All four sites have lifts. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the Jewish Museum and the National Holocaust Museum if you arrange it beforehand.

The Holocaust Names Memorial

A separate place, and free.

The National Holocaust Names Memorial (Nationaal Holocaust Namenmonument) stands on the Weesperstraat. It is a different place from the National Holocaust Museum and from the Hollandsche Schouwburg. Daniel Libeskind designed it, and it was unveiled on 19 September 2021.

Entry is free and no combination ticket is needed. The entrances on Nieuwe Keizersgracht and Nieuwe Herengracht are open from 08:00 to 20:00, and from 1 March to 1 October from 08:00 to 21:00. Both are wheelchair accessible. To get there, take tram 14 or metro line 51, 53 or 54 to Waterlooplein. The metro exit towards Weesperstraat has no lift.

It is a place of remembrance. Plan to spend your time there quietly.

Walking tours of the old Jewish quarter

For groups and for individual visitors.

A guided group walk

The "Jewish Amsterdam" walk starts at the Jewish Museum on Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1 and covers the history of the old Jewish quarter and its connection to the memorials. It lasts 1 hour, or 1.5 hours in the long version. It is offered for groups and costs €100 per guide. One guide leads up to 15 people, and a group can have up to 60 people. Guides speak Dutch, English, German, French, Hebrew or Spanish. Groups of 10 or more should book their visits to the museums in advance.

Tours for individual visitors

The tours above start at different meeting points. None of them includes entry to the Anne Frank House. Check the meeting point, the language, the length and what the ticket covers before you book. A good tour does not reduce every Jewish life story to Anne Frank. See also the page on walking tours of Jewish Amsterdam.
