Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit the Anne Frank House depends first on the ticket slot you can get, then on the season. This page gives the climate by month and the dates that change the plan.

Best time to visit the Anne Frank House

For the museum itself, the slot matters more than the month. Entry is by timed online ticket only, there are no tickets at the door, and a sold-out day stays sold out. A good plan starts with the date when your slot is released, not with the weather.

Slots are released on Tuesdays at 10:00, for visits six weeks later. On regular days the museum is open from 09:00 to 22:00. The season then decides how you spend the rest of the day, on the canals, in the Jordaan or at the other memorial sites in the city. The details of buying are on the tickets page, and if you want to add a guided walk outside the museum, see the walking tours of Jewish Amsterdam.

Climate in Amsterdam by month

Long-term averages for Schiphol, 1991 to 2020. They describe a normal year, not a forecast.

Highs are the average daily maximum and lows the average daily minimum of each month. Rain is the average monthly total. The station is at the airport, so readings in the old centre can differ a little.

For most visitors, April to June is the easiest range: April has the least rain in this table, and the highs of 14 to 20 °C suit long walks between the sites. July and August are the warmest but also the wettest on average, with August the highest at 98.6 mm.

Our pick: a cruise for any weather

Our take: the roof opens on fine days and stays closed when it rains.

Season by season

What changes for a visit, in short.

Winter, December to February

Highs stay near 6 to 7 °C and lows near 1 to 2 °C. Wear a coat, and use the cloakroom for coats and small bags. Daily exceptions apply around the holidays: on 25 December and 31 December the museum is open 09:00–17:00, and on 1 January 12:00–22:00.

Spring, March to May

Highs rise from 10 to almost 18 °C. On 27 April, Koningsdag, the museum is open 09:00–17:00. On 4 May the hours are also 09:00–17:00.

Summer, June to August

This is the warmest part of the year, with highs of 20 to 22.5 °C. Rain falls on average more in July and August than in June. The Westerkerk adds Saturdays to its opening days in July and August on some schedules, so check before you go.

Autumn, September to November

Highs fall from 19 to 10 °C and rain stays high, from 84 to 87 mm a month. The museum closes for Yom Kippur, which falls on a different date each year, and on 7 November 2026 it is open 09:00–18:30. Always look at the date picker when you book.

The full list is on the opening hours page. Other sites follow their own seasons. The Portuguese Synagogue is closed on Saturdays and keeps shorter hours at certain times of year: Fridays 11:00–16:00 in October and 11:00–14:00 in November, and in December Sunday to Thursday 11:00–16:00 and Friday 11:00–14:00. The National Holocaust Names Memorial is free, open 08:00–20:00, and 08:00–21:00 from 1 March to 1 October. The tower of the Westerkerk cannot be climbed at present, and the carillon can be heard on Tuesdays from 12:00 to 13:00. More on this is on the Westerkerk page and the Jewish Amsterdam page.

For most visitors, the best approach is simple: choose the day and slot first, then pick the museums and walks that fit around it.

Best time to visit: frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit the Anne Frank House?

April to June gives mild highs of 14 to 20 °C and the lowest rain in April. The museum needs a timed ticket in every month, so the slot you can book matters more than the month.

When are tickets released?

On Tuesdays at 10:00, for visits six weeks later. A date without a ticket on the booking page is sold out, and there is no waiting list. Dates that are not yet released are not sold out.

Is it better to visit in the evening?

On regular days the museum is open until 22:00, so late slots exist when they are offered. Choose from the slots you see when you book, because the booking page shows what is left.

Does the museum close on holidays?

Not completely. Koningsdag, 4 May, 25 December and 31 December have shorter hours, 1 January opens at 12:00, and the museum closes for Yom Kippur, whose date changes each year.

Is the climate in Amsterdam cold in winter?

Average highs in December to February are about 6 to 7 °C, and lows are around 1 to 2 °C. Dress in layers.

Is this the official site of the Anne Frank House?

No. This is an independent guide with no connection to the museum, the Anne Frank Stichting or the Anne Frank Fonds. Entry tickets are sold only by the museum itself.
